In February 2009 the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency published a new report including recommendations for Dutch and international policies on environmental sustainability. The report concludes that 70% of climate-change-mitigation costs could be saved through a global shift to a meat-free diet, with 80% being saved through a diet free of all animal products (a vegan diet) “The overall net present value of mitigation costs over the 2000–2050 period in both NoRM(no meat from ruminants) and NoM(no meat) are reduced by 70% compared to the reference case (0.3% of GDP and not 1%) and by even more than 80% in the NoAP case (Table 6)” (page 14). Also “In the Healthy Diet variant, for example, cumulative emissions are reduced by about 20%, while costs are reduced by more than 50%”(giving $20 trillion) (page 15). Using the Stern Report values, potential savings of $28 trillion and $32 trillion respectively are projected.
